Course Description: The rationale for this course is to equip the participants with workplace health and safety skills This course will support the participants in acquiring the necessary safety knowledge and to select an effective approach to undertake an action, task, or activity, especially in challenging environments or circumstances at the workplace. Many individuals, especially those who have been out of employment for several years, tend to feel discouraged and experience a low self-esteem, sometimes even low self-worth, or a general apathy towards employment safety regulations. This course will be a motivator to encourage a healthier and safer workplace life.

Target Group: The purpose of this course is a preparatory vocational training specifically designed for job seekers who have been employed in the past and are seeking to return into the labour market working the same or similar job or else changing their career path.

Course Structure: By the end of this course, the applicants will be able to:

1) Demonstrate a Sound knowledge of Occupational Health & Safety Laws & Regulations.

2) Identify various Hazards and their Risks,

3) Explain the purpose of Good Housekeeping.

4) Identify Appropriate Waste Disposal Norms.

5) Explain the concept of Personal Protective Equipment.

6) Distinguish the Physical & Psychological Hazards & Controls.

7) Understand the concept of Stress and effects.

8) Be aware of Use of Chemicals and Routes of Entry in the body.

9) Illustrate an awareness of Fire.

Entry Requirements: Applicants must have basic literacy in English/Maltese. IT literacy would be an asset but not a must. A graded profiling test and an individual interview will determine the literacy of level of the applicants English and Maltese.

Outline of Course: This module will introduce and familiarize the participants to the key of Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) Malta Laws and Regulations.

The participants will be introduced to:

- Various Hazards & Risks at the place of work. 

- The significance of housekeeping at the Workplace. 

- Team Work.

- Appropriate Waste Disposal methods. 

Competences:

a)    Recognise the protection of the workers physical, psychological, and social well-being. 

b)    Become aware of the legislations in force and procedures. 

c)     Recognise why it is so important to identify the Hazard. 

d)    Evaluate the Risk. 

e)    Take immediate action to eliminate or reduce the Hazard. 

f)     Make use of Administrative and Engineering controls. 

g)    Use Personal Protective Equipment.

h)    The significance of Housekeeping in the Workplace. 

i)      Choose appropriate Waste Disposal methods. 

Knowledge - 

a)    Concepts and principles of OHS Malta Authority Legislation. 

b)    Procedures & Statuary Regulations.

c)     Identifying the Hazard. 

d)    The importance of carrying out the Risk Assessment (RA). 

e)    The correct use of with Personal Protective Equipment.

f)     Housekeeping is crucial to a safe workplace.

g)    The functions & duties of OH&S Legal Obligations for adequate Waste Disposal management. 

Skills -

a)    Understand the importance of regulations and abide by H&S laws.

b)    Become more self-reflective. 

c)     To take immediate action to eliminate or reduce the Hazard. 

d)    Make use of Administrative and Engineering controls. 

e)    Appraising a safe workplace, with regards housekeeping practices.

f)     Applying the current regulations in Waste Disposal Management.

Judgment Skills and Critical Abilities

This section has been made sufficiently open to accommodate both vocational and academic orientations. Applicants can refer to Judgement Skills, or Critical Abilities (critical skills, dispositions, values, and actions), or both.

The learner will be able to:

1) Evaluate different workplace situations and where changes are required. 

2) Critically evaluate Occupational H&S at the place of work. 

3) Implement Occupational H&S with confidence.

4) Identify various situations, i.e., various hazards at the place of work where the risk varies radically according to the circumstances. 

5) become aware of waste management, different ways of disposing of different waste.

a) Interact in a small group with respect to OHS. 

b) Communicate more effectively. 

c) Be more assertive and motivated. 

d) Confidently communicate and discuss Occupational H&S Issues.

Learning Outcome 1: Outcome Type – Skill

Become more effectively communicative with colleagues at the workplace. Communicate problem solving strategies effectively and when required.

Become aware of own learning styles. Become more motivated towards health and safety. Identify his/her current decision-making style and work at establishing more effective decision-making styles. Practice values in line with health and safety. Collaborate and work in teams. Practice and apply the key principles of health and safety.  Understand key terminology of Occupational Health & Safety. Demonstrate an advanced understanding of the importance of health and safety at the workplace.

Assessment: The learners will be assessed through different methods to enable different learners to show their competence in the subject being assessed. The tutor will use mix of assessment procedures mainly:

Formative Assessment: Compilation of a reflective action plan, enabling learners to reflect on what they have learnt and how to apply it in the workplace.

Observation of participation in real life scenarios recreated, whereby the learners must solve the dilemmas presented, through analysis and application of the material learnt in class and practice newly learnt skills.

Summative assessment: A multiple-choice test where learners can show what they have learnt in class.
